This generation in gaming idiocy!: A mirthful look back!

"Puritan force, save me from the sexiness!"

So these past few years has seen a lot of “insanity” in the gamer/geek sphere of influence. Probably because we have the internet to stumble across ANYTHING whereas in my youth you needed Wizard, EGM, Dragon, and Gamepro to keep “In the know” when it came to videogames, comics, and role-playing.

Journey with me into the mouth of madness as we explore social justice Marxism within our favorite mediums as yesterday's magazines roll in their metaphorical graves!

David Ellis & Ryan Fleming accuse Kojima of misogyny.

So, Ellis is the guy who creatively helped on the newest Halo game. (Spartan Ops?) As such you think he would be well versed in the blue piece of hawt naked hologram that is Cortana!

Yet that did not stop Ellis from calling Hideo Kojima a “sexist” over a conceptual design for the female sniper “Quiet” from MGS5. (His exact words were "disgusting" "icky" and that eccentricity was a code-word for acceptable sexism) Ryan Fleming did not help the witch hunt hysteria when he threw in the term "misogyny" connected to his own self righteous article.

Does Quiet look sexy? Sure, I guess but technically she still wears more friggin clothes than Cortana! (Both because hologram AIs cannot wear real clothes and because Cortana is nude visually!)

To me accusing anyone of “women hatred” or "disgusting sexist behavior" are pretty steep and grave accusations. It’s like being told you hate kittens, hate puppies, hate hamburgers, hate Gandhi, or hate Dr. Seuss without substancial evidence to back it up. While we cannot be convicted over mere mud-slinging slurs they can still hurt our reputations and damage potential friendships.

Do I think Kojima is a misogynist? Sure, if he beats up his girlfriend and sells little girls into child slavery! But we all know Kojima does not fit that profile. The most he can be accused of is having a fetish for pretty women in military fatigues and big guns. Not exactly “abnormal” as far as fetishes go.

I found the whole debacle to be highly unprofessional. Even worse was when game journalists like Ryan Fleming white-knighted to Ellis’s defense as opposed to doing “the right thing” and telling him how hypocritical and stupid he was being.

Lastly Ellis referred to gamers as “man babies”. Way to look out for us and represent us, bro! Thanks for your support!

Dragon’s Crown controversy

Danielle will forever been known as that journalist who gave Dragon’s Crown a “6”. Personally I’m not upset she has a different opinion per se. However, her review consisted of the usual “This objectifies women” and “The art style makes me feel uncomfortable”. But if it is known fantasy beat-em-ups are not Danielle’s cup of tea, why did Polygon give her the game to review in the first place? I mean the editor must have insight into the kind of person Danielle is. As such it seems as if Danielle’s boss knew she would grade the game pretty harshly and go on a long winded tirade about the usual pseudo intellectual SJW bullshit!

Kotaku did not take to the game much better at first. The artist for Dragon’s Crown even did a mocking satirical illustration of burly dwarf wrestlers for one of Kotaku’s writers before the two of them supposedly dropped the whole issue and let bygones be bygones! (At least there was a resolution of sorts and Dragon’s Crown moved on to receive a good review from the site.)

But it begs the question, why are we so afraid of “art”? Why are we so afraid of unrealistic and erotic depictions of men and women? (Especially women!) Why is appreciating such things considered “childish” and “embarrassing”? I just get tired of all this whining over a type of fantasy escapism that does not even hurt or objectify REAL human beings!

PS: One of Danielle’s tweets expressed “pride” over her stance against Dragon’s crown. So what now Dani? Are you telling developers to “watch out” and that they better change their stuff to match your subjective personal tastes? C’mon, be more mature!

Lords Of Shadow 2 and the case of Kat Bailey

Kat Bailey is a good writer. I like her nostalgic blogs about rpgs and truth be told, we have a lot in common! (Maybe knowing that would make her cringe, I cannot tell you for sure!) Regardless, I was a bit surprised when Kat went a bit nutty over Lords Of Shadow 2. Supposedly there’s a scene where Dracula (The suave sexy Robert Carlyle!) feeds on a family while in a weakened state to revitalize his own health. Kat really did not give two craps about the murdered father but rather said the very act of Dracula feeding on a woman symbolically represents “rape”. (So I guess we can assume Dracula also rapes men whenever he bites the neck of a paladin or knight templar! But fuck that! Man rape is cool, right? It’s only tragic when it happens to women!) I could have simply “disagreed” with Kat up until that point. But when she compared “the family scene” to the controversial game Rape-Lay I saw her article for the immoral sensationalist hipster click-bait it truly was! Sorry Kat, you lost my patronage. I certainly hope you learn from your error!

PS: Lords Of Shadow 2 has many rather lackluster reviews. Though I’m sure it’s not a “perfect masterpiece”, I have to wonder if the scores are in part due to this whole controversy that happened before the game released. After all, Kat knows some pretty influential people in high places. I’m not saying for sure if she conspired against LOS2 on a massive scale. Yet had she wanted to she certainly had the platform to do it from!

Tomb-raider and Lara’s deflowered innocence! (Or rather, the lack there of!)

I realize some of you did not like the rebooted Tombraider game. Personally I loved it and thought it was well done but we’ve already debated that into tedium haven’t we?

This is more about the shit-storm that gathered around Tomb-Raider prior it’s release. An Eidos spokesperson made a speech about Lara being “vulnerable” to the point we would want to protect her. I really do not know why the press got bitchy over this statement. It’s a good human trait to have compassion and empathy for someone else. We tend to be “protective” of people we care about. I guess some of those bull dyke turbo feminists took it as Lara being weakened and watered down because they let fly with the usual accusations of sexism!

Anyway, the game takes place on an island Lara finds herself on after being shipwrecked. Additionally, there’s this “bad cult of crazy people” composed of ex-military types and shady criminals. Let’s be honest, when dealing with desperate men who have done morally questionable actions rape would be a possibility. And because this Tomb-raider goes for “realism” yeah, Lara might be at risk for being sexually assaulted.

That’s exactly what sensationalist game journalists ran with for awhile. Supposedly there was going to be this “harrowing rape attempt” during a quick time event. Welp, been there done that! You know what the guy does? He goes in to choke Lara with his bare hands! No groping her boobs. No grinding against her ass. This guy was a dyed in the wool killer. I do not think “banging Lara” or “Humiliating Lara sexually” was on his mind at all. He rightfully saw her as a potentially dangerous threat to take out swiftly.

I kind of wonder if things were changed up slightly merely because the gaming media made such a fuss over it. If games are like movies and books shouldn’t they feel free to explore even uncomfortable topics? Not according to the Orwellian thought police!

PS: Meanwhile, a guy WAS raped in Far-cry 3 but no one cares!

PPS: Rihanna Pratchett wrote the script for Tomraider 2013! (Yes, a woman!)

Killer is dead has lewd sexually ribaldry! (Yeah, so does GTA 5 you stupid fucks. Yet most of you did not care THEN did you? Except Carolyn Petit who caught literal HELL for giving GTA5 a 9 out of 10!)

So Killer Is Dead is part deeply psychological head trip and part tribute to James Bond. Mundo is an imperfect lecherous womanizer with an assortment of awesome weapons and Deus-Ex-y cybernerics. Aesthetically he’s a badass design! Anyway, Mundo fights other assassins, rides on tigers (I think?!), and ends up fighting his best friend/sibling rival on the moon. No, I’m not hitting the crack pipe. It’s simply how Suda 51 does things.

Regardless, there’s a “dating mode” where Mundo uses a combination of X-ray glasses, gifts, and “detective work” to read the body language of beautiful women in order to seduce them. Keep in mind this is not nearly as offensive as beating prostitutes to death with a giant purple dildo (Saints Row The 3rd ) or shooting a woman in the head just because “she’s annoying”. (GTA5) Additionally KID never pokes fun at minorities, satirizes activist groups, or does the myriad of other “shock tactics” Rockstar has built its’ franchise empire upon.

Yes,so much more tasteful!

Sure enough, people still took offense! I guess Japanese adult parodies are BAD but good ol American adult parodies are A-okay! (Thumbs up)

PS: And have you seen ANYONE bitch over South-Park: Stick Of Truth?! The double-standards are staggering! What the fuck you guys?! (Cartman voice)

Closing

Let’s be honest, NOONE cared about these petty nonsensical made-up “problems” when we were growing up! What the hell changed?

People feel the need to raise hell of the most ridiclous crap. I think its because they literally have nothing better to do. Especially feminist, im all for woamsn  rights*me being one and all* but sometimes they raise bs over the most stupid shit possiable. I love how half the people who made a  bitch storm out of things were woman. Can there be woman and then another name for woman that I can have, because I feel dont belong in the group no more! I swear none of those things bothered me, none.

People are out  to play the blame game on peoples actions, thoughts, and downright personailty. Plan and simple. Back in the old days violent games werent given much media light but oh fuck, someone killed someone and they were playing this game at some point around the time, it must have influnced them! I fucking swear, we live in a world were peope cant take reponsibility for thier bullshit nor people accept they did  it. They look for shit to blame so that the world can sleep a bit easier that a game caused, not because in just real life there are evil people. I fucking swear when will the moon be liveable on? Im done with earth!

Don't feel responsible,Nicole. You'd be surprised how many men write this garbage too! Equality and human-rights are important to me too which is why I get so pissed off when people make up these non-issues just so they can have click bait!

I actually have seen Polygon bitch over South Park, but that's over how you can't play as a girl which is equally stupid. Honestly though, the reason it hasn't gone beyond that is because Matt and Trey have a reputation of making fun of people they don't like. See Mel Gibson, Rob Reiner, and Barbara Streisand.

And these are just people who didn't do a thing to the guys, can you imagine if anyone called them a misogynist? I mean, this is how they made fun of Tom Cruise before he said anything about the show:

This is how they made fun of Tom Cruise after he went off on them for poking fun at him:

Now, if the gaming media attacked these guys unprovoked, I can't even imagine how Matt and Trey would retaliate. They say some of the stupidest shit I've ever read, but they know to let those guys have their Nazi zombie aborted fetuses, dungeon up a gay whore's ass, and Rod of Major Boobage.

You got a point,Cas. If someone went "really hard" after South Park's creators they would be metaphorically put out to sea bleeding while surrounded by sharks. lol. Seems like comedians are the most dangerous people on the planet. Unless they go up against someone like me. I don't have a self esteem to break and I'd actually be flattered to be South Park's whipping boy for awhile. Tongue Out

Take my word for it whenever I say that Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 deserves the low scores..

I heard tale of a "rat-form stealth mission" that was excruciating,Chris! Tongue Out That seems to be the biggest qualm people have so far. Personally I really loved the first Lords Of Shadow game. Haven't played the sequel though.

For being the 'most powerful vampire in existance' in the Castlevania world, stealth is an odd option considering the fact that you should be tearing out throats and taking names.

Also, there's another 'stealth' mission that seems to be damn near impossible and impassible. It's doable, but it's a major struggle. Hopefully I'll get the review cranked out and re-written soon enough. It all depends on the work influx today though, unfortunately...

I miss out on a lot of this stuff because I normally just play games like Yoshi's New island.  I did play Dragon's Crown, though.  I don't know what the big deal was, there have been video game characters that looked like that before.  I thought the Amazon was cool, myself.  Oh yeah, and thanks for the pics.

03/25/2014 at 03:28 PM

During the 90's there was a lot of beefcake and sexy female fan service in equal amounts. That's kind of my point,Cary. Most of us from that time played games and simply had fun as opposed to trying to find dastardely conspiracies within the stupidest of stuff!

Sadly we live in an age of thin skinned cry babies. Now I know some people would twist what I just said and claim I condone bullying. A lot of your examples fit that bill. They twist and exagerate. My point is these "journalist" are making mountains out of mole hills. There is always going to be something that offends someone. People need to get their priorities right, there are much more serious issues to be getting upset about than erotisism in art.

BrokenH

03/25/2014 at 03:31 PM

It's also like "crying wolf". People will begin seeing SJWs and feminists as a joke which is a bad thing considering once they finally start bringing up better and more serious problems they will have to repair the damage done to their credability through their own sensationalist stupidity before anyone will take them seriously again. So when you think about it these types actually hurt equality and hurt civil rights.

GeminiMan78

03/25/2014 at 07:43 PM

Its also just another group of extremists which do nothing but stir shit up. And your right, it does kill their credibility with everyone but their most loyel followers. But its funny because I remember when all this hit 1up a couple years back. I was intrigued until I started reading the stories and it was l put off by the shaming and very oneside veiw  of what to consider as mysogony in games. And it just snowballed from there, yet you don't see these people attacking hip hop video makers or hell porn for that matter. Why? Because those people are scary and not to be fucked with. But these techies are just nerds, they won't put up a fight, lets bash their shit.  Thats my theory anyway.lol

Bob Mackey pretty much went ape-shit on Japanese games and Japanese culture yet he would not call out "Whored mode" in Saints Row 3 or the more offensive stuff in God of War 3 and Duke Nukem Forever. It was such an idiotic and one sided argument,Gemini!

Many American game journalists love to point fingers but would never clean up the shit in their own backyards. It's ridiculous!

Alex-C25

03/25/2014 at 11:47 AM

I still stand to my notion that 2013 was the SJW and feminist videogame war.

With all of that and other things in Tumblr, i'm wondering if feminism has become a shell of its former self.

I dislike Lords of Shadow 2 because I wasn't too keen on the series being rebooted or reimagined or whatever, that supposedly 'controversial' scene isn't really anything to get up in arms about. And with Iga leaving Konami, my hopes of a more traditional Castlevania is dashed upon the rocks of reality.

BrokenH

03/25/2014 at 03:35 PM

I have a problem with "forced stealth missions". It's okay to make stealth an option (Even Alucard could turn into a bat or mist to avoid enemies) but having this creature that can slay Dracula in one hit?! It's Dracula for crying out loud! Noone one hit kills Dracula! That and I think letting Iga go was a big mistake. But if he starts a kick-starter I'm confident he will get plenty of support!

I think the problem is there's this "trap" that has been created. The system has been rigged where disagreeing with these "warriors of justice" makes you an angry neckbeard otaku or someone who hates women. But I think that's cracking,James. I've noticed a lot of people not buying the bull-shit anymore. Afterall, it's founded on slurs, ad hominems, fallacies, and broad sweeping generalizations over facts, rational debating, and logic. Such a strawman cannot support its' own weight forever!

I can see that.  Back on 1UP, I was called a "japanophile" for defending an jrpg.  I didn't even go all out on the game.  I just mention that I like it.  Those bastards that called me that retarded word didn't take the time to find out my favorite games at the time were wrpgs. Laughing

BrokenH

03/26/2014 at 01:49 PM

Ha ha ha! Yeah, it's funny,James! At that time I believe Dragonage was one of my favorite rpgs. I'm pretty smitten with most of the stuff Bioware does.

To be a Japanophile you would have to "overdo it" so to speak. But I've always known you to be a level headed guy with varied tastes!

Michael117

03/26/2014 at 11:53 AM

I don't like any of the writers you mentioned so I have no reason to defend them, but by far the greatest idiocy I see in the industry is from gamers and people in comment sections and on Twitter. There's a lot of writers who either aren't very good or in a lot of cases they actually are kinda good but they have agendas I might not agree with. Or certain ones might have values I agree with but they express it in extremely exclusive and condescending ways. Whatever the individual cases might be, in most cases at least those writers aren't tossing out death threats, rape threats, harrassing people, and threatening people's families. For some public personalities that kind of abuse and bullshit is a daily occurance.

The internet is a trash pile and you can find an occassional small oasis if you're lucky. There's a lot of shitty people out there in gaming communities who don't know how to think about what they say before they say it, control their temper, or take responsibility for their words. I would hate to be a public face in this industry whether it be a designer, paid writer, or just a popular blogger somewhere.

The types of internet behavior some people seem to have developed is a million times more disturbing than any of the agenda-articles I've seen written. Ever. All combined. People can learn to write better and articulate their ideas in ways that aren't condescending or exclusionary, if they really want to get better that is. But on the community side and knee-jerk social media side of things, people who have no impulse control, unrepentant rage, and no online conscience are the ones with the much bigger issues to work through. Social media is like the modern world's town square, and it's the type of town square where anybody from any corner of the world can instantly become part of the lynch mob and burn the witch at the stake, whoever the witch happens to be that day, whatever visable personality happens to have an opinion, be a dick that day, or just be a human.

I can't think of any times we have had to worry about that here, we have a pretty tight knit community with lots of good people who foster an accepting environment, and when people disagree it doesn't lead to flame wars, which I'm glad for. It's one of the biggest reasons I like our family we have going here. Venturing out into other bigger communities is kind of a nightmare, you can easily get lost in the rabble of hateful community members and people who think it's okay to be psycho online. Imagine if the way so many people acted and raged online was translated into real life, face-to-face interaction. We would have an honest to God apocalypse. There isn't a week that goes by where I'm not thankful we have this kind of atmosphere at Pixlbit, we can kind of be in here and look out at the craziness instead of be right in the middle of it.

BrokenH

03/26/2014 at 01:35 PM

"Rarely" I've been trolled here,Michael. Heck, maybe once? lol. There's only one time in particular it happened and then it never happened again. It's odd because usually trolls can do a pretty decent job infesting "those bigger communities" but here they have not really gained much of a foothold at all. Maybe because the staff at pixlbit are vigilant and actually care about their site? It could be.

It's also a case of living by example. When I first got here everyone was nice and welcoming. Not everyone has always agreed with me on certain issues but even when disagreeing they showed me respect. That encouraged me to be the same way in turn.

Personally I do not like death and rape threats either. Oh, I might tear into a writer and go on the offensive on why they are full of it. But threatening them or their family with sexual assault or murder? It's very childish and what's sad is some of those psychopaths really look up information on their targets. Adam Orth literally moved his family after the harassment he received on the internet. No, I do not love the guy but he did not deserve being made so afraid for his own life and for the the lives of his wife and children that he felt the need to physically go on a road trip and move into a new neighborhood. That's friggin bad, man. Don't even get me started how people treated Carolyn Petit when she had the "sheer audacity" to give GTA 5 a 9 out of 10 while admitting the game had sexism and misogyny. Normally when people use the "s" and "m" words my warning alarm goes off but let's be real, GTA "is" sexist and misogynist. Sure, it does it as a parody of American culture but that does not excuse it from criticism. Besides, Carolyn enjoyed the game enough to give it a friggin 9, she still loved playing it! But that was not enough for the fan-jerks who even brought their transphobia into the comments section.

I remember some assholes harassing you over Gutterdelve, was it from those dudes, did they actually end up coming here? We have a user base that seems pretty active and signs on regularly to check up on things, and the same goes for a lot of the staff, and they really love the community we have ,so altogether I agree with you and I think we have a top to bottom system where people seem to keep an eye out for trolls and people who are destructive.

I'm scared of the gaming communities and "industry" at large, I don't consider myself to be a part of it even though I'm heading towards game programming school, I probably actively avoid it all to be honest. Maybe the more accurate way to put it is that I'm hoping to avoid the public side of it. Pixlbit is that little oasis where we have good staff who produce interesting content, and a relatively small but tight knit enthusiast community that looks out for one another and gets along well.

I'm happy we have this place Ben, I wouldn't want to try and make friends or fit in over at a much bigger site. Not that there aren't plenty of good people all around the place I'm sure, but there's just a lot more noise in the process of finding those good people I bet. Lots of bad eggs that would just add stress for me.

There was this dude that came at me called Breaking H with his hip "Breaking Bad" avatar. lol. I think it might have been the guy who did a scathing overly critical Let's play of Gutter-delve but I'm not sure. He threatened to "taddle on me" when I wrote a rant about some of the people harassing me over my game and I pretty much said "Go ahead! All they can do is rate my game down at game-jolt! It's not like that is going to threaten or harm me directly or anything!". After that all I got is silence. I think he was expecting me to be "scared" and when I was more like "Whatever, man" my troll knew his quest was a futile one.  Douche-bag hasn't come back since but I see he's made it onto a few friends list. Probably by people innocently adding him without knowing he came to troll.

Looks like I might be doing some trolling on this post, upon taking the time to actually look more into the controversies that are spoken here.

But firs teh underlying answer to all of this could be summed up on how messed up our society has come along with the double standards now being imposed to general ignorance in thinking anything can go with any form of media these days. It might be considered splitting hairs when one person calls playboy porn and another calls it art so sadly te baseline for most issues hasn't been addressed for fear that one person's baseline will not match anothers nor is anyone willing to stand up to make a uniform code of decency like it was in the past without fear of being called a nazi.

Okay now to the points in question!

David Ellis & Ryan Fleming accuse Kojima of misogyny. - my thoughts.

Fault can be found with all parties on this one in a sense. I can understand Kojima trying to have a different take on a character in this MGS series. Despite the differences between Sniper Wolf and The End, they still looked, acted, dressed and had the character of a sniper. But with that said he should've known given this day and age taht someoen is going to call him out on it when one of his reasonings for making Quiet like he did was for "cosplayers". It don't matter how big a name you are in any industry: if your doing something, even for "artistic" reasoning or for just changing things up you better have a better reason for doing such instead of just saying "because i can."

On the flip side David Ellis & Ryan Fleming shoud've known better in using any word that can to trash Kojima for his choice in making Quiet. The term they used didn't fit the situation and was probably only used given how it was the word of the day at the time. they could've worded their statements better instead of making more of a personal attack against them man. Whether they were "white knighting" or just trying to make a name for themselves is a non issue for me myself. They too should've been called out for also trying to label Kojima like they did but sadly in this current climate of double standards and everything goes EXCEPT THAT mentality.

Dragon’s Crown controversy - my take

This one shouldn't have been a shock to anyone really. If you make a game like that and use those kind of "artistic" liberties, someone is going to call you out on it. And in a sense I'm glad they did. Again the makers of Dragon's Crown chose the route they did with this game and stated the reasonings why they did such. As far as I'm concerned they didn't do anything wrong in making this game and it ranks up there with creative choice.

On the other hand with Danielle I can see where she's coming from in why she rated the game like she did. She not only was she reviewing the game but also making a statement about the game that very few other reviewers even mentioned in any way, shape or form with their writings. I'm sure if she really wanted to make a statement she'd have rated it a 1 but given that she's trying to be "professional" a 6 was more fitting. she still touched on the games high points but made sure how she felt about the portrayal of women in the game itself. And that's what's important about the review process and having more than one take on reviews in general. When I read a review I expect to hear the positive and the negative reguardless of the content. It was just a shame that Danielle was one of the very few that spoke up about it. Yes you still can have that kind of artwork for any form of media, but given how we are becoming more "civilized" as a socieity it should be expected that someone is once again going to call you out on it.

I'd continue but I fear my statements might've gone too far.
