Gamed it Up, Again

Posted on 11/04/2015 at 03:27 AM | Filed Under Blogs

Yea! The Topsy Turvy thing! It turns the whole world upside down and then back again and you watch the enemies fall from the sky. Funny.

I think that's the part where you're in a turet and have to shoot at hoards of attackers. Just use the morter shell a lot. I'm also playing on easy. I figure, that way I can beat the game, in all likelihood, and then decide if it was good enough to replay on a harder difficulty. I used to stick to the default settings, but I have no shame now.

My friend Mark played some Dirt 3 and liked it to a point. It's apparently a bit on the sim side of racing, which is challenging. I remember playing the first Dirt demo and being wowed by the authentic engine sounds. Boy, it sounded good. Then I rolled over on every turn.

Random Update 11-03-15

Oh that cottage on an island sounds dreamy. I haven't been camping in so long and I think about it all the time. I was actually thinking today how I could live out of a tent or something similar, 'cause I would. If I had a house and some land, I'd probably set up a tent in the back yard and sleep there. That's how I roll, my bedroll that is.

Anyway, it also sounds like a great walking simulator. I'd like to take video footage of that location and render it in an engine for a game.

Oh Broken Age. I've been wanting to play that for a long time now.

How about, Three Whinos or Game Whinos. Get it, whining and wino? Scumcast is pretty good though. Very catchy. It makes me think you're going to talk about the SCUM engine from 90s PC gaming, but I'm probably the only one who would think that. Scumcast suggests some attitude, like "we're going to be edgy and say whatever we want." I like that.

Cool review man. Liked it.

Some musings on RPGs, CRPGs, and Genre Distinction (Part 1?)

Posted on 11/04/2015 at 02:55 AM | Filed Under Blogs

You can apparently play many sports games like RPGs. The new NBA game among them. Kat Bailey on the Axe of the Blood God podcast (formerly of Active Time Babble and 1UP) talks about that all the time.

Elements of traditional RPGs have been taken for other genres of games now. Stuff like extensive stat management, level progression and equipment buffs. It tends to blur the lines drawn between genres. But I think genres are largely created by marketers to help them describe their product and identify their buyers. How much it matters to the rest of us becomes a social issue I suppose. RPG = nerd. Sports = cool. Whoever wants to seem more important chooses their side and then makes up a line of reasoning to prove they are better. It's stupid.

Yea, it's not hard to control at all. It looks sweet on my HD TV playing from Virtual Console too.

You're right, it's sumi-e for the art style. I guess the game's title is some kind of play on the sound of the word sumi-e.

Mercs is great.

Yes, it is the one with the grafitti art. It was fine. Only Tempest seemed to not play right. I couldn't get the thing all the way around the edge like you're supposed to. I tried both buttons and touch screen controls.
