
I caught the recap and told my students to watch it since we were going over movies.
To me, I actually like that the Oscars promotes underdog/indie films. For one, those tend to be the kinds of movies I enjoy (I honestly thought Mad Max was just okay, though I think it deserves the tech achievements it got) and for another I think the Grammys are the cynical popularity contest. By comparison, an Oscar seems more based on merit than box office numbers, where Grammys seem more based on Billboard numbers (with ocassional exceptions like Beck last year) than artistic integrity.
Having said that, the Oscars show itself can be incredibly dry and boring, and there's definitely political awards given I don't agree with. But I usually watch. This year I couldn't because my TV doesn't pick up ABC and they don't stream in Nacogdoches, so I had to live with just recaps. Glad Leo finally won ...
