The Games of Super Mario 3-D All-Stars

Posted on 12/08/2020 at 01:56 AM | Filed Under Blogs

I forgot how much fun Galaxy is, been really enjoying replaying that one though. Can only do it on the TV though, not a fan of the touch controls. Also wish we got Galaxy 2, but get the feeling this collection is a preview for N64, GC and Wii games on Switch and it'll be on there sooner rather than later. Sunshine hasn't been as much fun as I remember, it kind of feels like if early 2000s Sonic Team made a Mario game. Has a gimmick that never realizes its full potential, awkwardly voiced cutscenes, a lack of pollish compared to the 90s games in the series, and a structure that really pads it out. 64 I loved as a kid and has a good number of fantastic levels, but man it has not aged well. The Bowser levels, Tick Tock Clock and the carpet level feel borderline unplayable with how they show how aged the controls feel.

My Top 13 PS4/XB1 Games

Couldn't get into FFXV because the combat felt overly complicated and too basic at the same time. Never played FF Type-0, Yakuza 0 or Sakura Wars, but I did like what I played of Yakuza Kiwami and am ready to play Like a Dragon when I finish Spider-Man Miles Morales. Fallout 4 I liked but I felt it was two steps back for everything it did right. The leveling especially felt unsatisfying but I still spent over 60 hours with the game and did a ton of stufff in it so there's that.

There's a few honorable mentions of my own like The Evil Within 2, Streets of Rage 4, Tearaway Unfolded (if I didn't play it on Vita first it would for sure have been on here), Marvel's Spider-Man, Ratchet and Clank, and Astro Bot VR Adventures.

Episode 190: Xbox Series S and the Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants

Posted on 12/04/2020 at 02:46 PM | Filed Under Feature

Stage Select:

1. That I finally have money to travel and can't. Keeps me away from family and friends who are in other parts of the world

2. My pocket notebook, because it has information that would destroy my life if it wasn't on hand.

3. My three year old mind being blown at controlling what was on the TV. Yes I'm a simple person.

4. Boston by Boston- I have yet to meet anyone who doesn't like this band or album.

5. Cervesatron- I would turn into a Rolling Rock truck

6. About once every six months. I run a lot so they wear out quick.

Cage Match

Chrono Trigger. Even if the FF crew won, they wouldn't kill the Chrono Trigger crew and they would go back in time and redo the fight so they win this time.

Episode 188: By Grabthar's Hammer, What a Podcast

Posted on 11/11/2020 at 11:50 AM | Filed Under Feature

3. Isabelle (Animal Crossing)- Every time she updates you on your island is so charming

2. Sif the Great Grey Wolf (Dark Souls)- Hes guarding his masters grave until the day he dies with a sword in his mouth. If that's not a good boy I don't know what is.

1. Rockruff (Pokémon Sun/Moon)- My favorite dog Pokémon, this has sentimental value because it's a Rock type and was introduced soon after my dog Rocky passed away.

Cage Match

Skull tries to use electric attacks but the FFX crew are adept at dodging them thanks to getting the platinum trophy. Skull then falls flat on his face and Tidus laughs uncontrollably. The rest of the FFX crew then notice that the rest of the Phantom Thieves left to steal the treasure from Seymour Guado's palace. Everyone wins!

Episode 187: Son of Halloween Havoc

Posted on 10/22/2020 at 12:23 PM | Filed Under Feature

Stage Select (Warning: I really really love Mass Effect)

Set it 1000 years after Mass Effect 3. The Genophage was cured under Wrex and Eve and the Quarians made peace with the Geth, but every other choice will be up in the air and decided during conversations. For instance, if a character explains Shepard spared Kaiden, you can confirm it or correct them to say Shepard saved Ashley. I left out the Krogan and Quarian choices to ensure the two races are still in the game. The Galaxy has two councils, the more powerful one called The Alliance Council and led by:

Humans, who were spared in large numbers by Reapers to create a new one that never reached the phase where people were killed. Because of this, they weren't as hurt as some other races by the war. Their initiative and leadership were crucial the Galaxy to recover.

Quarians- Their exile ended up being perfect experience to aid other species in recovering. They still wear their suits out of tradition, but without the glass masks (unless in space) as their immune systems have recovered

Geth- If you picked destroy, the Quarians quickly rebuilt them and either way they now live as AI in ships and space suits. They are preparing to leave the Galaxy, however to join as one collective conscious.

Krogan- Wrex led their military to wipe out any chaos after the war while Eve eliminated their archaic customs. Krogan are still known for being soldiers, but are more similar to Turians in the trilogy as they also thrive politically, economically and especially scientifically.

Salarian colonists- Splintered off from the Dalatrass, but otherwise largely the same. They want to unify, but not under the current Dalatrass' terms, favoring an uncentralized leadership.

Turians- The weakest of the main races, as they were hit the hardest by the Reaper war to cripple their strong military and still haven’t fully recovered even a thousand years later. The Krogan replacing their role has left them lost as a society. They're still a powerful race, just not the super power they once were.

The Alliance Council is far from perfect, but is trying to keep the Galaxy united, with every race having a say unless they choose to not associate. The ones who don’t form the Terminus Council:

Asari- Created a lot of mistrust from hiding Prothean tech, with some blaming the Reaper War's severity on them. The accusation was blown out of proportion but the Asari created their own council led by Aria T'loak when the old one fell apart. Modern Asari are very influenced by her leadership, creating a cutthroat culture, with Aria's first replacement still in power and so similar there's rumors shes really Aria's daughter.

Yahg- Aria helped uplift this race to be their muscle to counter Krogans. The Yahg are more civilized than in ME2/3 but still highly aggressive and a common enemy in the game.

Hanar- The Asari lured them with Prothean artifacts and knowledge. Hanar are good intentioned, but zealous with their Prothean religion and will assist Asari with anything.

Drell- Have recovered thanks to Asari aid and have as much loyalty to them as Hanar. They’re still dangerous assassins but their perfect memory have made them thrive in science and politics

Salarian Dalatrass- A powerful force, but a shell of the Salarians in the trilogy. Wants to use the Terminus Council to conquer colonist worlds, but is being used by the Asari

The plot of the game will work like Dragon Age Origins, letting you pick between Human, Quarian, Asari, and Drell. Each origin ends with an aged Liara asking you to join her on an expedition to stop a group of terrorists. From there, you will discover they found an ancient race’s incomplete Crucible and work for the Terminus Council, eventually revealing their intentions: If Shepard destroyed, they want to use it to take control of all Geth before they leave the Galaxy to seize control of space suits and ships to conquer the Alliance Council. If Control they plan to control the Shepard VI and bring back the Reapers. If Synthesis, they plan to hijack the Geth to locate the Reapers and conquer them.
The player can then take control for themselves or destroy the method to control the Geth, siding with either or neither council, with the player able to both destroy both councils or force an alliance between the two.

As far as gameplay goes, if I didn’t mention it, I agree with everything Julian says.

Cage Match:

Eternal Darkness tries to make Luigi go insane, but fails due to Luigi's already existing insanity from living in Mario's shadow. Luigi's Mansion wins.

Episode 186: Nerds Without Therapists

Stage Select:

3. Vault 92 (Fallout 3)- I consider Fallout Vaults close enough to haunted since most of them are filled with corpses of their inhabitants and just enough looming threats to put you in danger. Any my favorite is 92 where creative people were lured in told they were to preserve art when in reality they were subject to a white noise that would make them violent, obedient soldiers. They did not become obedient. Chaos ensued.

2. Peragus (Kotor 2)- Not a traditional haunted house, but this mining field is filled with murderous droids, tapes of people killing each other and droids killing them, and has a Sith Lord who died in a war only to be resurrected with the goal of hunting your character down. If that doesn't meet a haunted house's requirements, I don't know what does.

1. Castlevania- What else could it be? Literally every monster and mythical creature in public domain resides in the castle with Dracula and Death waiting for you at the end of it. No other haunted house can compete with this.

Still addicted to Animal Crossing

Posted on 10/05/2020 at 11:56 AM | Filed Under Blogs

I've been off Animal Crossing since June when my unit got activated for the riots and millions of bells worth of turnips went bad when I was gone. I had fun with it when I played it though. I'd recommend playing Galaxy in TV mode when you get around to it, the motion controls don't really translate well to handheld play. And whatever you do, do not go for 100% in Sunshine. Getting all the main sprites is fun but those blue coins will destroy you.

Episode 184: The Mod Squad

Posted on 09/15/2020 at 10:47 AM | Filed Under Feature

Stage Select

Halo 3: Finish the Fight- Hearing this song while two Scarabs fall from the sky at once is still my favorite moment in the series and made the game feel so epic.

Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness: Mirror B's Theme- So imagine you're playing one of the most mediocre RPGs ever made, then all of the sudden two grunts mention their boss Mirror B is here, followed by a guy in a purple disco suit and enormous Pokeball colored afro moonwalking in and this song starts playing

Mirror B should be in every Pokémon game.

Cage Match

Cyberpunk wins because Avengers would build a strategy around Spider-Man (based on that old movie Terminator) then forget he's only in the PlayStation version and they're working with their PC crew

Episode 183: These Challenging Times

Posted on 09/04/2020 at 02:23 PM | Filed Under Feature

Stage Select:

Mass Effect mod for male Shepard to be voiced by H Jon Benjamin. Let's assume I have the talent to reanimate Shepard to lip sync perfectly and access to H Jon Benjamin for this. Your role playing options would be between Sterling Archer and Bob Belcher. Imagine the one liners:

"Joker, stop treating EDI like she's people"

"Well obviously I'm going to shoot the Blue Suns member!"

"No, no, no, no, WHY WOULD YOU SEND OUT THAT MANY MECHS?"

"Well I'm glad you Krogan are excited because I'm going to kill myself"

Cage Match

I've played Dig Dug but haven't heard of Mr Do! The impression I get is Mr Do can get things done unnoticed. So I see Mr Do! winning.

Episode 182: El Generico

Posted on 08/18/2020 at 05:36 PM | Filed Under Feature

Stage Select: I've been keeping up with a lot of new releases. Doom Eternal, Animal Crossing, Paper Mario, Phantasy Star Online 2, and especially Streets of Rage 4 all delivered. The Last of Us 2 did not. Other than that, I've been playing every Halo in The Master Chief Collection on PC before Infinite. Have a lot more time for it now! There have been a few random indie games like Time Spinner, Dead Cells, and Carrion thrown in there too.

Cage Match: Battlefront 2 2005 wins no contest. It's like comparing John Carpenter's Halloween to Rob Zombie's.
