I saw this article about Mattel making Mario Kart themed Hot Wheels toys on IGN.

I started thinking of my boyhood when I played with Hot Wheel and Matchbox cars A LOT. Back in those days they were made of all metal and felt so good in your little kid hand. My parents tell me I used to sit for hours, just lining them up, from a very young age, and then I continued to play with them until I was 8 ot 10 or so. I didn't have a million of them like some kids, but I had enough, and of course I had my favorites. I remember I had a Porsche 928 I was especially fond of. I would make them drive around the floor getting into crashes that send them flying into the air.

Did you play with toy cars when you were a kid?

I'm tempted to get some of those Mario Kart Hot Wheels.  Hallmark just made a Mario Kart Christmas tree ornament.

When I was a kid, I played with cars when I was younger.  I didn't have a ton, but I had enough.  I had a little gas station set where you could slide the cars down a road.  I also had a set of Hot Wheels made to look like the cars in The Dukes of Hazzard.  Every time the TV would come on, I'd go get my Pac-Man TV tray and my Dukes of Hazzard cars and play with them in front of the TV while the show was on.  I wish I still had those cars.  I stopped playing with cars pretty early on, though.  Once I discovered that video games were more fun, they took up most of my time after that.

Yeah, that's probably what happened to me too!

I remember playing with toys sometimes, but being way more interested in video games. We were always pushed to play outside, but I was a pretty low energy kid and since it was Texas, I kinda liked the A/C. I also never had an imagination that really "filled in the gaps" enough that I wasn't hyper-aware of the fact I was rolling a couple pieces of plastic on the ground.

Having said that, I remember wishing we had those complex, looping tracks they'd have in straight-to-video Disney movies of the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids variety, but if we ever had one I think I may have lost interest cause there were only so many loops.

I do recall thinking Hot Wheels were cool, though.

I played outside a lot as a kid... we had a really nice backyard. After a while though, I heard the call of video games as well....

This was my favorite Matchbox as a kid. The decal wore off mine. It's a Dodge Charger and the body pops up to show the engine like it was a dragster. I don't know why they made this in pink, not my choice for color, but I love the design of the car. The first real car I drove was my dad's Dodge Charger but it was a 1978 model and a luxury car not a muscle car like this, I think, 1971 model.

Also, I remember specific fantasies I used to use while playing with my cars. One was a wagon train story and another was using the patterns in a rug to create a city and imagine various tasks that send the cars to different parts of the rug. Ha!

Oh I was big into cars, robots, GI Joes, and Lego. I was the typical kid. I did have a ton of Hot Wheels but I was never into the playsets. I tried Micro Machines but I wasn't really into them. Of course now I got back into buying them but I open only a couple of them to put around my TV.

Those Mariokart cars look good. Hot Wheels released an 8 car set I think it was last year where they took regular Hot Wheels and had Super Mario decorations on them.

I remember those. They were pretty sweet.
