Gone Insane - Darkest Dungeon

Today I wanted to post about a new game for a change. Darkest Dungeon is one of my favorite games of the past few years - it's got great combat, great strategy, a cool design, and a foreboding mood. Unofrtunately, it's also incredibly difficult.

Tasked with exploring dungeons at an old, haunted estate, you manage both your teams on missions, and the homebase town where you outfit and heal them. The combat is 2D and turnbased, with cool animations and a real punchy feel. But it's also brutal - not just with damage and status effects, but also on the personalities of your characters - they go insane, turn cowardly, manic, etc. Once they've been affected by the dark deep, you must restore them in town with the church (for their faith), at the tavern (for their sanity), etc. You'll lose characters permanenlty if they die in battle.

However, as you explore and manage to bring back loot and experience, you can upgrade your town and your adventurers. It's a war of attrition.

When Darkest Dungeoin first came out a couple of years ago on Steam Early Access, people complained it was TOO hard. Well, it's gotten easier, but not by much, and also gotten more complicated and deep. You can now find the game on PS4, Xbox, Switch, and mobile devices.

Boy, I feel like playing it right now!

This game was covered on the Axe of the Blood God podcast (great show that talks about RPGs of all types). They interviewed the team behind Darkest Dungeon and its upcoming sequel. It was pretty fascinating hearing the about the work they put into making the game. The santiy mechanic sounds interesting.

that's really cool. What's interesting is there are already games that have been released that were obviously inspired by Darkest Dungeon.

So you go to the tavern to restore your sanity. That's my excuse from now on. You're driving me crazy so I'm off to the Pub.

Man talk about stress, if your character dies you lose them in battle. I see the appeal but damn that could be some throwing your controller across the room frustration.

I think I have this on my PS4. I started it but didn't get very far the first time. I need to go back to it again.

I really like it, but it is tough.
