Tough Luck - The Dark Spire

Here is another insanely difficult game. The Dark Spire was released in 2009 for the Nintendo DS, and is obviously inspired by games like Wizardry. It was probably released in America due to the success of Etrian Odyssey, a similar 1st person dungeon crawler. However, while EO is all about drawing your map, The Dark Spire has no map. You're on your own with this shit.

Like other games in this genre, you create your adventurers and explore the dungeon filled with random encounters. Permadeath is a fact of life. Combat is cruel.

However, this game is not without it's beauty. The graphics are really cool, and you can even change the setting to a more classic mode, where it's just black and white line art graphics (if you're truly masochistic). It also has really cool music, and that also switches in classic mode to more 8 bit sound.

I really liked this game, but it turned out to be too difficult for me. It is damn cool though.

These screenshots are reminiscent of Viewtiful Joe/Okami.

Yeah I don’t know where that look originally derives from but it’s cool.

This isn't my type of game but I would probably try the line art option just to be different. I would also rage quit real quick.

it's kind of impossible, but it's a neat curiosity.

Oh cool. I may have to look this one up. I love an old dungeon crawl, difficult or not. I like those creepy graphics. Reminds me of the German expressionist films of the 20s I'm reading about right now like Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

I'm so mad this game is still $35 at Gamestop. I want to play it.

It’s pretty rare...not a big release.
