Death Awaits - Left 4 Dead

When I first moved back to Maryland, I got heavy into online shooters. This was the time of Team Fortress, Battlefield Bad Company, Call of Duty 4, and other games. But the most fun I had was playing co-op with my brother with Left 4 Dead. What was so amazing about this game wasn't just its innovations as an assymetrical multiplayer online game, but you could also play splitscreen locally with another player while you played online.

This was kind of in the middle of the insane zombie explosion that was going on at the time that has mercifully mostly faded. But Left 4 Dead did zombies so well, with enemies that were so fun to be and a terror to fight against.

If you've never played it, there are two teams - a human team, and a zombie team. There were also computer zombies that could sometimes be easy to take out, and sometimes not. This was a game that rewarded teamwork with wins, and a well coordinated team could cause havok, zombie or human. The humans were trying to get to the end of the level - and the zombies were supposed to kill them while they tried.

I had so much fun with this game, but I burned out on FPS shooters after a while, and have never returned to them. This was years ago. I may have overdid it.

I tried to get into Left 4 Dead several times, but it never stuck. I coerced my friend Mark to play it with me but it didn't stick for him either. Probably it was best with four players and not two?

yeah, it seems like a game you would like, but like most online games, you can get teamed up with assholes a lot. We had some good experiences and some bad ones, and this was in the early days of headsets, so there were often prepubescent boys saying the "N" word over and over. But when it did work, it was really fun.

There was a point for me when playing online shooters was a lot of fun, probably around the PS2/original XBox era. It was fun to just get a couple of games in before bed. Now I've lost interest because of the people.

I wasn't too big into Left for Dead but Call of Duty and Battlefield, those were my go-to's even if I got dizzy after playing for a bit.
