In 2000/2001 I worked for a music licensing company that managed the rights to music acts to make products. Think KISS wine, Beatles lunchboxes, and Britney Spears dolls. It was a little insane, and stressful. But I got paid more money than I ever had been before. Of course, my first order of business was to buy a "gaming" computer, which was a little different then than now. I ordered it from Dell, and I think I paid over $2000 for it. One day, I took off work to pick up the package at the local post office, and I borrowed their hand-truck to wheel it up the hill to my house. Then I set it up. I was in ecstasy. I could finally play the games I wanted in the way they deserved - Quake 3, Half-Life. But most importantly, Team Fortress.

Team Fortress was a half-life mod that originated as a Quake mod. I played that too. But it was really special as a Half-Life mod. Two teams battled it out in capture-the-flag or control point games. It was the first shooter I know of that had classes - there was the soldier (who had a rocket launcher); the heavy (who had a gattling gun); the spy (who could disguise himself); the sniper; and other classes.

It was glorious. I played for hours upon hours. I got pretty damn good at it too.

The game was eventually bought buy Valve, who turned it into Team Fortress 2, after years of being in development hell. That game has been a blockbuster, and is still thriving to this day.

But I'll never forget my time with the original.

You could be a ninja, but could you be a monkey?

Point: TimeSplitters.

ha ha. I played a lot of Timesplitters 2 on the original Xbox. Great game.

My brother Jeff played a lot of Team Fortress 2 back in the day.  The only thing I know about Team Fortress is that one of the characters was playable in TellTale's Poker Night game.  Too bad TellTale went out of business.  That's what you get for making nothing but follow-your-nose zombie games.

yeah it's too bad about Telltale.

Ha ha, maybe I stole your brother's flag in a game once!

I remember Team Fortress as part of The Orange Box on Xbox 360. I think I played it for about 5 minutes. It seemed cool, I just didn't have anyone to play it with.

The Orange Box was awesome! Half Life 2 and Portal blew my mind!

Why isn't there a remaster of Half-Life 1, 2 for today's systems? It's a crime.

actually, some people made a mod that rebuilt the original half life in half life 2. It's called "Black Mesa."

I've heard of that. I also realized today that The Orange Box is backwards compatible with XBO, so I can replay Half-life 2 and the added chapters again if I want.

Man 2000 was such a fun time. I remember thinking I had to backup my old Packard Bell because of Y2K, and then I think right around the same time I did my first build your own computer.

I never got into Team Fortress. I played more Counter Strike because my brother played a bunch and it was the game with my friends but eventually I gave Team Fortress a try thanks to the 360.
