Though only a minor mention in Nintendo's third quarter investor briefing, it seems yet another 2D side-scrolling Mario game is in the works for the 3DS. According to Nintendo, the two Mario games released in 2011 for the 3DS - Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 - are their centerpiece evergreen titles. That information combined with the overwhelming success of both New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. Wii make a new 2D side-scrolling Mario game an easy call.

Kid Icarus was one of the earliest first party Nintendo games, coming out little more than a year after the full U.S. release of the NES. It holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers, even if most people recognize the protagonist Pit more from his appearance in Super Smash Bros. at this point. Things appear to be looking up for Nintendo's latest portable.

The Nintendo 3DS may have had a rocky start but it's been gaining back ground since the holiday season. Now Andriasang is reporting that the 3DS has sold more units in December than any other console since Enterbrain started tracking figure numbers back in 1997 in Japan.
